Secret Origin: Arlecchina was born in small backstreet alley in the Italian part of Gotham City. Her mother was a homeless person, who, bieng mentally unbalanced and unable to deal with the responsibility of a child, abandoned Arlecchina , leaving her bundled up behind some garbage cans. About a day after her birth, Arle was discovered by Robert Brooks. Robert, no doubt, had been looking for food in the alley and stumbled upon Arle. Being the good natured soul that he is, Robert brought young Arle back with him to the homeless shelter in Crime Alley. Robert was 10 years old at the time. Over the years, living at the homeless shelter, Robert took care of Arle as best he could. He named her Jessica Brooks, after his dead sister. Arle was like a sister to him. Also there to look after her was Dr. Leslie Thompkins, who took the girl under her wing and tried to teach her as best she could about right and wrong. Arle would never forget her kindness.
When Roberto was 16 and Arle was 6, Robert sought out "employment" with Rupert Thorn. Robert and Arle were accepted by Thorn and continued to work for him for many years. Growing up in one of Thorns many bases of operation introduced Arle to violence and crime. Just by watching and listening to her step-brother and his associates helped her learn about crime and punishment. Arle didn't like Thorn very much, but she worshiped her brother. She thought he was a great mob boss, but in truth he was just a lowly lacky. Growing up int his negative envrinoment, a complete antithesis to what Dr Thompkins had taught her, gave Arle a confused idea of life. Unable to reconcile the violent life she was being taught, with her natural good nature and what Dr Thompkins had taught her, Arle grew up a bright, intelligent and friendly child, but with an alarming lack of morality. She did what she thought was right, often viewed by society as wrong. Arle , had, unfortunately, become her like her mother, mentally unstable.
Behind closed doors Robert was kind and gentle to the young girl he called "sister", but in front of his friends and associates he would be mean and rough. When Arle was 11 she developed a large crush on one of her brother's friends. She tagged along with her brother and his friends a lot. Robert got annoyed with her and told her to leave them alone. She didn't and he hit her and pushed her in to a wall. "Good one," one of his friends laughed. Spurned on by the compliments of his friends, from then on he did not hesitate to hit Arle . Sometimes even his friends would hit her, too. Arle let them hit her not trying to defend herself at all. She believed that her brother and his friends would abandon her if she defended herself.Added to her confused idea of right and wrong, was this now abusive treatment, to further add to her confusion.
It wasn't long until she heard of the Joker and Thorn's troubles with him. She was captivated by the Joker's bizarre looks and the extraordinary way he did whatever he pleased. She didn't believe The Joker was insane, just an individual. Soon she heard of Harley Quinn and her relationship with The Joker . She was soon convinced that her brother wasn't insane. . When he hit her he loved her. She told her brother that she knew he loved her now and told him how she knew. Robert got angey that she compared him to The Joker and beat her harder than ever. He told her he hated her. She was horrified and tempted to leave her home with Thorn and Robert to seek out the Joker . Roberto tried to discourage her. He told her that Joker didn't run a smooth business and that Batman bothered Joker to the extent that in almost every scheme, The Joker was foiled by him. Arle became more enticed with The Joker and anger at Robert for putting her hero down. She began to design a costume and an identity for herself to become a real clown worthy of the Joker . She started traingin in martial arts and all types of sorcery and other skills so she would be ready to impress the Joker .
She chose the name Arlecchina because it meant harlequin in Italian and she had been born in the Italian part of Gotham City. She continued to go to school (Rupert Thorn had always paid for her education.), while she trained in her own time.
. Still behind closed doors her brother was kind to her. She decided he must have a split personality like Two Face. She soon wanted to learn about people who were insane to find out if her brother was.She started reading psychology books in order to analyse her brother, and asked people around her what they thought insanity was. After a while she came to the conclusion that her brother was indeed insane, and that he shoudln't be doing the things he did. Further more, he told her that she was never going to leave, she would always stay with him forever. She never forgave him and ignored him as best she could. She believed The Joker was the only one who wasn't insane in the world and that Robert was insane.
Finally, at the age of 16, Arle felt she had trained long enough and was skilled enough to seek out the Joker and offer her services. Robert (who was 26 now) was strongly opposed to her leaving. Robert and Arle had a huge fight and he tried to hit her in the head! With the martial arts she had learned, she fought back. She actually broke his arm by accident! She was so upset she had broken his arm. She ran away crying. While she ran she thought of her brother and how he said he didn't love her. She realized she didn't love him and she had lowered herself. She had become him. Her mind snapped, totally.Like the Joker , she now existed in her own world and her own ideas of reality. She had become what she had hated. She vowed to be like The Joker , Harley , and the CLA. !
Now she was on her own, and had to survive by herself. With ehr skills she managed to do this for several days. The she heard the news. Harley and Joker had escaped from Arkham! This was her chance to find them and prove herself! However, it wasn't as easy as that. For weeks she tried to no avail. Then she heard on the underground grapevine, Joker and Thorne were trying to form a type of partnership for mutul benefit! This news cheered her up enormously as she knew exactly where Thorne's B.O.O was. She had grown up in it! The next night she made her way there. As she came up to the gates, she heard the screeching of tires and an outrageous green and purple car coming towards her at top speed! And who should she happen to see in the car, but Joker and Harley coming up fast!Apparantly, the attempted partnership had not gone well.
So desperate to join the Clown Prince of Crime and his henchgirl, Arle actually jumped in front of the car! Harley , who was driving, swerved in order not to hit Arle , but unfortunately, failed in doing so. Arle was hit in the side and went flying onto the boulder she previously had been resting upon. She was hit unconscious. Feeling responsible in some way for little Arle , and feeling sympathy for her (Arle was dressed in her new costume), Harley wanted to pull over and help her, although Joker proetsted. Finally, tired of fighting over the wheel, Joker pushed Harley from the car and went on his merry way.Harley crawled over to help Arle , who was ina state of dazed confusion.
Hoisting her up, Harley slowly made her way back to the CLA HQ, where Joker very rarely went. When Arle regained consciosness she couldn't believe it. She was at the CLA hideout! She thought she was in heaven. She explained who she was and why she was there. Impressed by her story, and after a demonstration of her skills, Arle found herself welcome for a stay in the CLA. After proving adept on several capers and robberies, she was officially invited to join Marionette's new team, the J-Gen.
However, the Joker had no idea she was in the team, and when he made an unexpected visit to the HQ about month afterwards, he was furious they had allowed someone in ithout his permission. Although he din't get involved with the group, he still felt in charge of it. The other members were all terrified, and din't know what to do when Joker drew his gun and prepared to kill Arle. Arle thought fast and told Joker she could tell him everything about Thorne, that would allow Joker to destory him. Joker was immediately interested, and put away his gun.
After hearing her story, Joker realised how insane she was, and also how useful, so he graciously allowed her in. Like he does with the toher members, he ignores her unless he needs her. Arle just felt happy she was around The Joker and not her brother. She believes anything he does is good and just.
Arle and Harley became great friends and soon Arle was known through out Gotham as the Italian version of Harley Quinn . Arle tries to live up to that name by acting like Harley as much and as good as she can. . She is dangerous and smart. Her obsession with her brother's treatment of her still haunts her and any mention of Thorn causes her to loose control. Her motivation is purely the need to be with the "sane people" and not her brother and the rest of the world.
