SECRET ORIGIN: Esmeralda DeLee was born to Alison DeLee, a nightclub singer, on a rainy night in Scotland. The young girl grew up relatively happy and came to enjoy taking risks. She was trained in the art of singing by her weak-willed mother who, although well meaning, was never able to become the sort of parent Esmeralda admired. She never met her father and honestly thought he would have been just as boring, if not more so, as her mother. When Esmeralda was sixteen, her mother was willed a declining manufacturing plant from a distant dying uncle and a small sum of cash. Overjoyed at the prospect of forming a new life, Alison took Esmeralda and the two women set off for Brazil to personally take over the plant.
Alison found herself and her daughter surrounded by grungy men and a disgusting environment in the factory. Alison was overwhelmed and was about to sell the plant to one of the workers, but Esmeralda had something else in mind. The girl explained to her mother that she felt strongly about the potential of the manufacturing plant and firmly demanded that they stay for at least two years. Her mother submitted to the strong willed girl and allowed her child to take over the plant. At first, Esmeralda found the sexual comments by the workers and the unclean atmosphere depressing. She could not think of a useful way to make money off the plant and the time was running out. Suddenly, 'Alda got an idea and obsessively set about putting it into action. Within three months, the plant was bustling again thanks to 'donations' from various nearby communities and buyers from terrorist groups in the area. By the time the specified two-year time limit came around, the plant was a powerful and prosperous military weapons manufacturer for several countries, terrorist groups, and black market organizations.
Now a multi-millionaire, 'Alda sent her fretful mother home to Scotland and placed a trustworthy board of directors in charge of the plant, now deemed DeLee Manufacturers. She now had plenty of free time on her hands but wanted more challenges. Now eighteen years old, Esmeralda set off on a globe-spanning tour of the world learning various forms of defense and combat. She applied for the FBI but, after studying for two months, decided it was not what she wanted to do with her life and resumed her world tour. She learned various forms of healing and hunting techniques from several tribes in Africa, she was taught miscellaneous martial arts and how to fight with various blades in Japan, and a variety of other interesting trades including archery, kick-boxing, and piloting.
After acquiring these skills, Esmeralda decided to take on an alias for herself to become a professional thief. Inspired by the plays she had seen in Japan, she adopted the name of Kabuki: the Japanese form of comedy performed mostly by using exaggerated expressions. Under this guise she committed several daring thefts and even a few assassinations. She met other costumed criminals and temporarily formed a group dubbed Assassins for Hire. It was through this group that she met David MacCarthy also known as Death. The two instantly fell in love and had a brief relationship before parting on friendly terms.
She also met a poison expert calling herself Mistletoe and Sadness, a woman who could make any killing look like a suicide. This was Kabuki's family for three years until she received a letter from her mother who was dying of lung cancer. Kabuki rushed to her home in Scotland just in time to speak to her dying mother who finally told her daughter the identity of her father and how they met.
It seemed that while Alison was visiting a friend in Iran, she met the JokerJoker's child.
Kabuki was fascinated by the story and, after her mother died, she set off for Gotham City to find and hopefully work alongside her notorious father. After much searching, she at last discovered one of his hideouts and introduced herself. The Joker was angry that anyone would pretend to be his child and in a rage threw her out a window. Luckily, Kabuki managed to survive the fall by grabbing onto a nearby ledge. In a blind rage similar to her father's Kabuki decided that if he would not give her any attention, she would destroy him. She prepared her assassination equipment and placed herself on a nearby building until she could get a clear shot of her father. She was nearly ready to fire when a voice spoke out behind her. Turning to face the person she was surprised to see another woman in a clown costume. The woman introduced herself as Harley Quinn, the Joker's lover, and managed to calm Kabuki's temper. Through consistent persuasion, Kabuki was soon allowed to join her father and Harley on a crime. To the Joker's genuine surprise, his daughter proved herself to be actually good at her job. He was impressed and eventually managed to admit that Kabuki did look similar to him.
When introduced to the Clown League of America, Kabuki was genuinely happy to meet more clown-based criminals. She feels slightly jealous of Harley Quinn, who the Joker treats with the most affection. Kabuki genuinely likes Harley who has become like a close friend to her, but still wishes that she and her father could be closer. Kabuki also has grown to nurture a deep infatuation with the world-renown Clown Prince.
